Three students from 3D Design Chair Kevin O’Callaghan’s 3D Design class were featured in a recent issue of Education Life, a special section of The New York Times. The issue explored the following questions: Where does creativity come from? Is it handed out at birth or cultivated as we go along?
In her article “Learning to Think Outside the Box,” Laura Pappano said, “Educators are convinced that creativity is not necessarily the result of magic and genius, but is a practical skill that can be learned and applied in daily life.” Students were invited to send photos for an accompanying slide show of projects that demonstrate creative thinking. Not surprisingly, O’Callahan’s students made
the cut. Their challenge: design one thing that has multiple functions.
Andrew Seetoh, a fourth-year BFA Design student, says that everyone in his class was given half of a high-heeled shoe as a prompt. He looked at the heel and thought of an old-fashioned record turntable with a festive twist. “I would imagine someone taking the shoes off and putting them on a record, just to continue dancing barefoot, or to calm down after all the excitement from a big night out.”
Da Som Lee says she wanted to create something that was not only fun but would also make people think, “ah-ha.” She saw O’Callahan’s assignment as a chance to tackle a vexing problem: her habit of being too distracted to take her vitamins. The first-year BFA Design student envisioned utensils with handles that double as pill vials. People would never forget to take their meds, she reasoned, if the pills were literally in their hands three times a day.
First-year BFA Advertising student Morgan Light’s project started out as a device that would not only charge her phone but keep it from falling on her face when texting late at night. “It turns out I’m not the only one with this problem,” she realized. “We’ve become zombies that can’t turn away from them.” Her cell phone helmet is a tongue-in-cheek solution to this very 21st century problem.
