In The Press: Steven Heller in The Atlantic

March 21, 2011

This month, MFA Design Department Co-chair Steven Heller began contributing to The Atlantic Web site. His first column is an interview with Roger Bennett, author of a number of books, including Everything You Know Is Pong: How Mighty Table Tennis Shapes Our World.

Bennett discusses his fascination with Ping-Pong, which began while growing up in Liverpool, England, and how most of his closest friends are also fans. He also claims to have built a “Smithsonian-sized collection of Ping-Pong related ephemera: 1950s tobacco ads, 1960s Chinese propaganda, 1970s proto-video game materials,” and believes that, “Ping-Pong was always tightly connected to celebrity.” Heller also admits that Ping-Pong is a popular sport in his family, with his mother having been a Ping-Pong champion during  her college years in NYC in the 1930’s.

Check back to The Atlantic for more contributions from Heller, including a look at a new Alice in Wonderland app for the iPad.
