This month, Modern Metals featured an article covering several high-profile projects arranged by 3D Design Chair Kevin O’Callaghan. Students were asked to transform the Zastavia Koral car, a gas-guzzling Chevy “Monster” pickup truck and New York City phone booths into works of art. Resulting projects included a copper-laden submarine, a subway car, a couch, pedestal sink, a bookshelf and a mini daycare center, all transformed from these unusual source materials.
Describing the class as being especially hands-on, O’Callaghan says, “I’m a big believer that computers are a wonderful thing and a great tool, but they don’t teach you the integrity of materials. You only learn the integrity of a material when you hold it.”
