Honor Roll: D-Crit Student Aileen Kwun Wins Winterhouse Award

October 7, 2010

Aileen Kwun, currently a student in the MFA Design Criticism Department, is one of two writers to receive this year’s AIGA Winterhouse Award for Design Writing and Criticism in the Education category for her paper “Lady Gaga is a Machine for Dancing.” The award recognizes excellence in writing about design, and is part of AIGA’s larger initiative to encourage awareness and critical thinking about design issues.

Describing Lady Gaga as a “Warholian pop princess,” Kwun goes on to consider the use of the term “architectural” to describe Gaga’s outfits and “has since trickled down to more a liberal use in mainstream fashion media.” Kwun’s essay fulfilled the Winterhouse’s criteria for “writing, in the interest of making visual work or scholarship or cultural observation, [that] demonstrates extraordinary originality and promise”
