In The Press: MFA Design Criticism Department in Design Observer

June 15, 2010

Contemplating excessive energy and resource use in the modern world, writer John Thackara stresses the value of design criticism and analysis in an essay in Design Observer: “Designers can very usefully cast fresh and respectful eyes on situations to reveal material and cultural qualities that might not be obvious to those who live in them.”

The essay is adapted from the keynote address Thackara gave at Crossing the Line: The 2010 D-Crit Conference, where industry professionals and the first graduating class from the MFA Design Criticism Department presented papers. The event took place on April 30 and video of the presentations is available on the D-Crit Web site. The conference was covered by many design publications, including ReadyMade, which  interviewed two of the graduating students, Alan Rapp (MFA 2010 Design Criticism) and Chappell Ellison (MFA 2010 Design Criticism), about their thesis projects.
