Examining the abundance of performance art happening at major New York art institutions, from MoMA’s recently closed Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present to the Whitney’s upcoming Off the Wall, the June 4 – 6 issue of amNew York interviewed alumnus and SVA staff member Matthew White (MFA 2008 Fine Arts) for an artist’s perspective on quality, video recordings and ownership of performance pieces.
White has done performances at the Brooklyn galleries English Kills Art Gallery and Grace Exhibition Space and Gallery as well as the Open International Performance Art Festival in Beijing last fall. Although White also works in sculpture, he told the Briefs, “Performance can be what’s needed for certain pieces. Certain ideas need to be expressed in time and in person.”
