Five projects completed by students and alumni from the BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department won Pencil Awards at The One Show College Competition ceremony in May. The annual competition is organized by The One Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in advertising, and awards Pencils of Gold, Silver and Bronze status. Jane Cronk (BFA 2010 Advertising) and Chelsea Cumings (BFA 2010 Advertising) received a Gold Pencil for Website Design. In the Product Design category only two pencils were awarded, both to SVA student teams: Yoshie Asei, Carlos Ochoa (BFA 2010 Advertising), Frankmy Olivo and Pablo Velez won a Gold Pencil and Marianna D’Annunzio (BFA 2010 Advertising), Young Wook Kim (BFA 2010 Advertising) and Hisashi Matsui (BFA 2010 Advertising) won a Silver Pencil. Similarly, in the category of Logo Design, only two pencils were awarded and both went to SVA students: James Kuczynski and Liza Sie together won the Silver and Bronze Pencils in Logo Design. SVA had 24 finalists in the competition, a record for the College and faculty member Frank Anselmo, who teaches Unconventional Advertising.
One Show Design, a professional competition by The One Club, recognized Proof, the 2010-2011 undergraduate catalog. The Visual Arts Press, the in-house design studio at SVA, received a Silver Pencil for the catalog in the category of Collateral Design—Self-promotion.
The design blog UnBeige called out the “smashing catalog of undergraduate work” in a recent post about the awards.
