Made Up

September 15, 2009

For its recent seasonal promotional campaign, M•A•C Cosmetics turned to faculty members Maira Kalman (MFA Design Department) and Marilyn Minter (MFA Fine Arts Department) for unusual approaches to using makeup. The two artists each created new artworks using eye liners, eye shadows and lipsticks from the company’s fall line as their media, resulting in uncommon images that still retain each woman’s signature visual style.

Kalman’s portrait of an unnamed woman is rendered in the cosmetic company’s Technakohl line of eye makeup, using standard makeup pencils and brushes to apply bright and subtle hues to the canvas. Minter, whose work often zooms in on iridescent applications of glamour, uses M•A•C’s glitter pigments to depict a shimmery, spidery close-up of a woman’s closed eye.
