Angels in the Americas

September 18, 2009

SVA welcomed several special guests from the Cuban Mission to the United Nations at the reception for “Date with the Angels” at the Westside Gallery on September 11. The exhibition, which features the work of 41 Cuban printmakers, is the result of a collaboration over several years between SVA and the Taller Experimental de Gráfica, Cuba’s foremost printmaking facility.

To create the works in the show, the Cuban artists printed, painted and laid collage elements upon lithographs produced by faculty member Gunars Prande, which were made from two documentary photographs taken in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 by former faculty member Richard Falco.

Ambassador Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez and several other high-ranking officials from the Cuban Mission and the Cuban Ministry of Culture were on hand to take in the exhibition and greet representatives from the College and members of the New York community.

“Date with the Angels” has been attracting some attention in the media: see what Anderson Cooper had to say about it; and watch an NY1 interview with Visual Arts Gallery Director Francis Di Tommaso.
