Graphis Gold

April 3, 2009

The international design and visual communication magazine Graphis recently announced the winners of its 2009 Graphis Awards and SVA brought home two pieces of gold. The SVA promotional poster To Help See the Possibilities, designed by faculty member Mirko Ilic, and the Where the Truth Lies poster, created by Brian E. Smith and Michael J. Walsh at the Visual Arts Press (VAP), both won Gold Awards. The award had a particular resonance for Ilic: “Graphis Annuals have a special place in my heart,” he says. “They were one of the first foreign books which I was able to see in Yugoslavia as a teenager.”

Ilic’s poster was part of a citywide advertising campaign for the College, and Where the Truth Lies promoted a symposium on propaganda that SVA presented with the PhD Programs in History and Sociology of the Graduate Center, CUNY in 2008. “Working with Mirko on this project was fun and a great experience,” said Anthony P. Rhodes, who is SVA’s executive vice president and the creative director of the VAP. “This was Mirko’s first subway poster for SVA and I think he got it just right.”
