The Half-Century Mark

March 12, 2009

The March/April 2009 issue of Communication Arts (CA) marks the magazine’s 50th anniversary. As part of the celebration, CA commissioned illustrator Cathie Bleck to pen a feature-length interview with SVA faculty member and Acting Chairman Milton Glaser. The lengthy Q&A with the graphic design icon includes a discussion of his lifelong friendship with SVA’s late founder, Silas H. Rhodes, and his work on the façade of the new Visual Arts Theater. Many of the posters Glaser has created for the College are included alongside the interview.

In addition to the Glaser article, CA also compiled a 20-page timeline that looks at key moments from advertising and design in the last half century. Among the visual landmarks identified by the magazine are works by faculty members Bob Giraldi, Glaser and Stefan Sagmeister; alumni Paul Davis (G 1959 Illustration) and Jennifer Golub (BFA 1979 Fine Arts); and George Tscherny, who designed SVA’s current logo and visual identity.
