Each year, the AIGA honors professionals in the field of design for its Gold Medal. Several members of the SVA community have received this award in the past, including faculty member and alumnus Gail Anderson (2008), SVA Founder Silas H. Rhodes (2004) and current Acting Chairman Milton Glaser (1972). This year, BFA Advertising and Graphic Design faculty member Carin Goldberg will be added to the list of Gold Medal luminaries, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the field of design and visual communication. Goldberg is a former creative director at Time Inc. Custom Publishing and currently the principal of Carin Goldberg Design, which creates award-winning designs for book jackets, CD packaging and other media. She will formally receive the award at the AIGA’s Design Legends Gala on Thursday, September 17, in New York City.
In addition to Goldberg’s gold, alumnus Paul Hoppe (MFA 2005 Illustration as Visual Essay) was recently chosen by the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles for its Gold Award. Hoppe won the prize for his work titled Destinations, which was featured in the German publication Metagenda.
Finally, a bit of Olympic gold has rubbed off on current MPS Digital Photography Department student Tolga Adanali. One of his photographs from the 2008 Beijing Olympics has been named Photo of the Year by the Turkish Photo Reporters Association (TPRA). Also, one of Adanali’s images of the Turkish and Greek prime ministers was recognized in the TPRA’s roundup of the year’s political photos.
