Inauguration Commemoration: Maira Kalman

February 2, 2009

The New York Times online is featuring a new visual essay by Maira Kalman, faculty member in the MFA Fine Arts Department. Called The Inauguration. At Last., the essay documents Kalman’s trip to Washington, D.C. for the 44th Presidential Inauguration. Over the weekend, The Inauguration. At Last. was one of the ten most emailed articles on The New York Times Web site.

This essay marks the beginning of a column about American democracy that Kalman will create for the Opinion section of The Times online called “And the Pursuit of Happiness.” The column will appear on the last Friday of each month.

Alumnus Erin Gleeson (MFA 2007 Photography, Video and Related Media) also journeyed to D.C. to document President Obama’s inauguration. Offering a street-level perspective on the day’s festivities, her photographs can be viewed at her Web site.
