The Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University has just announced that BFA Photography Department faculty member Jennette Williams is the latest winner of the CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography. The prize is given biannually, offering the winning photographer the opportunity to publish their first book, along with a cash grant and an exhibition of the winning work at Duke. Williams won the prize for The Bathers, her color and monochrome photographs of women at European and Turkish bathhouses, a project she has been working on since 1994.
The prize was juried by renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark, who said of the winner: “Jennette is both an excellent documentary photographer and a superb portraitist—a rare combination.” Mark will pen a foreword to The Bathers: Photographs by Jennette Williams, which is due to be published in fall 2009 by Duke University Press and the CDS.
