For the second year in a row, SVA had a booth at Aqua Art Miami in Wynwood, one of the most closely watched satellite art fairs during last week’s Art Basel Miami Beach. The booth featured painting, photography, sculpture, video and drawing by nine artists who completed their studies at SVA this year: Brendan Austin, Daniel John Gadd, Allison Kaufman, Avery McCarthy, Sean Basil McGiver, Jenny Morgan, David Mramor, Trish Tillman and Matthew White. At the conclusion of the December 3 – 7 fair, three artists had sold work from the SVA booth, drawing attention from curators, dealers and collectors.
In addition to organizing the booth, SVA was represented throughout Miami’s art fair events. During Aqua’s opening-night preview event, the College invited alumni to attend as SVA’s guests. BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department faculty member Debbie Millman moderated an event at the Wolfsonian museum on December 6, in which art-world luminaries such as Anita Kunz, Richard Tuttle and fellow faculty member James Victore were invited to speak about the idea of “freedom” for 5 minutes. There were also nearly two dozen SVA alumni showing work at the various satellite fairs, including Lili Almog (BFA 1992 Photography), Eric Rhein (MFA 2000 Fine Arts; BFA 1985 Fine Arts), Amy Wilson (BFA 1995 Fine Arts; faculty) and Martin Wittfoth (MFA 2007 Illustration as Visual Essay).
