For its first-ever Avant Guardian Award in Education, Surface magazine has chosen to honor the inaugural class of students in the MFA Design Criticism Department at SVA. The latest issue of the magazine includes a profile of the program’s chair, Alice Twemlow, along with some of the 15 students who started in the program this fall. The program’s co-founder (and co-chair of the MFA Design Department) Steve Heller tells Surface, “Most of us fall into design criticism by accident, but sometimes you need to help the accident along.” The issue also features select Avant Guardian winners from the past 10 years, including alumnus Jing Quek (BFA 2007 Photography).

In other awards news, on October 14, the Art Directors Club (ADC) named faculty member Maira Kalman as a 2008 Hall of Fame laureate. Kalman is one of the seven honorees being acknowledged this year for their work as professionals in visual arts and communications. The ADC began its Hall of Fame in 1971, and past inductees have included alumnus Paul Davis (1995; G 1959 Illustration), Acting Chairman Milton Glaser (1979), SVA Founder Silas H. Rhodes (1988) and BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department Chair Richard Wilde (1999).
