Charles H. Traub, chair of the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department, is participating in a pair of noteworthy projects. Traub and co-author Jonathan Lipkin are expanding their influential 2003 textbook, In the Realm of the Circuit: Computers, Art and Culture, into an interactive online project. Available at metaforas.org, the new site contains updated versions of the book’s contents, as well as a wiki platform that makes the site editable by users. The project is licensed under Creative Commons, a system that allows material under copyright to be made available online for others to share and build upon legally.
In addition, Traub is the juror for the 2008 National Photography Competition. The 13th year of this annual competition is presented by the Soho Photo gallery, 15 White Street, which is showcasing the work of the winners through Saturday, August 9. Traub says he was impressed by the submissions to the competition, observing, “We do find a revealing commentary here on the many ideas, tropes and opportunities that the medium challenges us with at this moment in time.”
