Conventional Wisdom

April 18, 2008

Local comic book fans are gearing up for one of the year’s biggest industry events, New York Comic-Con (NYCC). This large-scale convention takes place April 18 – 20 at the Jacob Javits Center, and students from the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department are set to be part of the action. Faculty advisor Keith Mayerson is working with a cadre of student cartoonists to set up an SVA booth at NYCC, displaying their original comics, the senior cartooning magazine and the department’s annual portfolio to fellow convention-goers. The display will be the first part of a multi-city tour: Mayerson and his students are planning to take their wares to several other events throughout the year, including the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art Festival, June 7 – 8, and the New York Anime Festival at the Javits Center in the fall. After the large-scale NYCC, Mayerson’s crew will be coming back to the SVA campus for Fresh Meat. Student club Cartoon Allies presents this annual mini-comic convention, featuring students’ original comic books and other cartooning creations for sale on Friday, May 2, 6 – 10pm, in the Monkey Bar Lounge, 217 East 23rd Street. Admission is free.
