NYC residents and visitors who are curious about the city’s typographic history can check out Take the A Train: A Tour of Lettering in New York City, a talk by BFA Advertising and Graphic Design faculty member Paul Shaw on Monday, March 31, 6:30pm, at the New York Public Library, 40th Street and Fifth Avenue. Shaw, a designer and historian specializing in lettering, will give a geographical, historical and stylistic tour of lettering in the five boroughs. The presentation will cover inscriptional lettering on tombstones, churches and skyscrapers; terracotta letters on warehouses and industrial buildings; neon letters on bars and liquor stores; graffiti on playground walls; and the mosaic lettering of the subway system. The program is free and open to the public.
