Bard ‘Toons

January 18, 2008

The works of William Shakespeare are generally considered to be timeless, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do with the occasional update into a contemporary idiom. Educator Adam Sexton wanted to re-think some of The Bard’s work for a new generation of readers, so he brought in alumni from the BFA Animation and BFA Illustration and Cartooning Departments to create manga-inspired, graphic novel versions of Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet for the John Wiley & Sons imprint.

The four titles are due out in early February and all feature the original Shakespeare dialogue with the new artwork: Macbeth illustrated by Candice Chow (BFA 2004 Animation), Hamlet by Maria Kristina Pantoja (BFA 2005 Cartooning), Julius Caesar from Hyeondo Park (BFA 2006 Cartooning) and Romeo and Juliet drawn by Yali Lin (BFA 2006 Cartooning). Following this initial run, Sexton has plans for manga versions of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, which will both be illustrated by Lin in early 2009.
