Security Sweater

December 7, 2007

The notion of “narrative art” usually brings to mind a multi-panel drawing or sequential lens-based images. Alumnus Devon Dikeou (MFA 1988 Fine Arts) is presenting a different kind of narrative with “Niney,” her new show at artMovingProjects, 166 North 12th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The subject of “Niney” is a child’s sweater that Dikeou has kept in her possession since childhood. Using a combination of photographs, documentation, paintings and a written timeline, the exhibition builds the single item of clothing into a significant personal totem of fragility, safety and comfort, colliding with fear, vulnerability and voyeurism. This ongoing work has appeared in previous iterations at Postmasters Gallery and Robin Rule Gallery, with this latest installment extending Dikeou’s evolving narrative.

“Niney” is now on view at artMoving Projects, through Sunday, February 10, 2008.
