Language Lessons

November 9, 2007

The Sordini Art Gallery at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is kicking of its exhibition season with a first for the gallery. “The Language of Comics” features work from graphic novels, a genre that had not been displayed previously, and focuses on a pair of SVA faculty members: Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, both of whom teach in the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department.

The Sordoni exhibit will feature original drawings from Abel’s long-form narrative La Perdida (Pantheon), winner of the 2002 Harvey Award for Best New Series; and Madden’s 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style (Chamberlain Bros.), which features the same narrative portrayed in multiple ways, varying by point of view, style of drawing and genre interpretation. “The Language of Comics” is on view through Sunday, December 9.
