In Transit

November 30, 2007

Alumnus and current SVA staff member Malin Abrahamsson (BFA 1998 Fine Arts) has been awarded an Arts for Transit commission by New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Abrahamsson will create two 9×8′ mosaic wall installations, a 48-foot-long mosaic banding decoration and a 9-foot-diameter terrazzo floor medallion, all of which will be installed at the MTA’s Valley Stream Long Island Railroad station, in the spring of 2008.

In other awards news, United States Artists (USA), an organization that works to direct philanthropic donations to American artists, recently announced its slate of 2007 fellowship recipients. Among the 50 recipients in eight disciplines were SVA alumni Charles Gaines (E 1968) and Gary Simmons (BFA 1988 Fine Arts). This is the second year of USA’s Fellows program, which awards unrestricted fellowship grants of $50,000 to each recipient.
