New York magazine recently took a look at New York City artists whose impact is felt throughout the art world, and two members of the SVA community made the final lists. The “Young Masters” segment, which picked 10 of the most promising young artists on the scene today, included alumnus Mika Rottenberg (BFA 2001 Fine Arts). The video artist was cited for the way she, “takes some of the most exhaustively fraught terrain of contemporary art—gender politics, post-Marxism—and makes it light, funny and visually seductive.”
In another of the magazine’s lists, “Twenty New Yorkers Whose Art Changed Art,” BFA Fine Arts Department faculty member Mary Heilmann was singled out for her ability to infuse colorful geometric paintings with palpable emotion. Heilmann was included on the New York list alongside such epoch-making artists as Vito Acconci, Jeff Koons and Barbara Kruger.
