As new and returning students arrive at SVA for the beginning of the 2006–07 academic year, they’ll come to a campus that has undergone several upgrades over the summer. First is a new residence hall that has been added to the SVA campus: nearly 100 students are housed in the Tenth Street Residence, on the corner of 10th Street and 3rd Avenue in the East Village. Another notable change is the new location for CAVA, the College’s on-campus technology store. Opening on Friday, September 14 in its new location, 207 East 23rd Street, CAVA will be selling Apple computers, iPods, software and a wide range of digital peripherals to the SVA community. The new state-of-the-art retail space was designed by Spacesmith, the interior design firm founded by BFA Interior Design Department Chair Jane Smith.
In addition, the Office of Physical Plant completed nearly two dozen facilities-improvement projects in SVA’s buildings, including: building a new smart classroom and renovating the BFA Film, Video and Animation Department studios at 209 East 23rd Street; working on a new library and offices for the MFA Design Department and new office space for the MPS Art Therapy Department at 380 2nd Avenue; renovating the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department’s space at 136 West 21st Street; upgrading the facilities for the MFA Computer Art Department at 133/141 West 21st Street; and completing work on the first phase of the three-year renovation plan for the George Washington Residence Hall.
