Breaking Down Walls

September 7, 2007

This week, Chelsea’s Winkleman Gallery, 637 West 27th Street, Suite A, opened a new exhibition by alumnus Thomas Lendvai (MFA 2002 Fine Arts), entitled “Between Pain and Boredom.” The show is a site-specific installation that literally breaks through the walls of the gallery: Lendvai has constructed a series of 16-foot beams of raw white pine that arc through the gallery, breaking through interior and exterior walls to reveal both factory-cut caps and crudely sawed-off ends. The resulting installation is a large-scale contemporary work that the artist completed using centuries-old construction techniques in place of computer-driven precision. “Between Pain and Boredom” is on view at Winkelman through Saturday, October 6.
