By Royal Decree

April 6, 2007

Alumnus Joseph F. Tiedemann (BFA 1992 Illustration) has recently completed a commission to restore and conserve Philip Guston’s large-scale Work and Play mural at the Jacob Riis Community Center in Long Island City, Queens. The project even had official royal backing: it was funded by the Princess of Denmark. Part of the Queensbridge housing project, the Riis Center was originally founded in New York City by Danish immigrants, and as such holds a place of esteem in Denmark’s world history. The restoration, which Tiedemann performed through his company, Renaissance Restoration Studios, brought back the vibrant colors of Guston’s 40-foot mural, originally painted for the site in 1940.
