Pro and Con

March 2, 2007

From February 23 – 25, the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan hosted the second annual New York ComicCon. More than 300 exhibitors set up booths displaying comic books, graphic novels, toys, t-shirts and more, giving comics fans a look at the state of industry and a peek into the future. SVA once again hosted a booth where more than 20 students and alumni from the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department showed their work, including original art, self-published mini-comics, copies of Ink Stains magazine (the publication of the Cartoon Allies extracurricular club) and the department’s portfolio books.

Faculty member Keith Mayerson organized SVA’s participation in ComicCon, along with student Nina Kester and the rest of the members of Cartoon Allies. “The event was tremendously successful,” says Mayerson. “Our booth was in a central location, alongside DC, Marvel and many other major companies. We had two tables flooded with student comics and books, plus a salon-style display of many pieces of student artwork, and we all got to interact with many comic publishers and professionals.” For more information on ComicCon, visit
