Open for Openings

September 8, 2006

It’s September in New York City, which can only mean one thing: a full slate of new exhibitions opening in Manhattan’s Chelsea art district. The large volume of shows starting this weekend features no small number of SVA alumni with new work on display in the galleries. Some highlights include mixed-media artist Janice Caswell (BFA 1998 Fine Arts), who has “Lay of the Land” at Schroeder Romero, 637 West 27th Street, through Saturday, October 14; Stuart Hawkins (MFA 1996 Photography and Related Media), with her solo exhibition of photography, “Customs,” at Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL), 530 West 24th Street, through Saturday, September 23; and “Wallpaper,” a group show at Lennon Weinberg, 514 West 25th Street, which will feature the work of Miyeon Lee (BFA 2004 Fine Arts), Gary Simmons (BFA 1988 Fine Arts), Joni Sternbach (BFA 1977 Photography) and Phoebe Washburn (MFA 2002 Fine Arts), through Thursday, October 14.

The flurry of openings continues the following weekend, with new shows from distinguished alumnus Joseph Kosuth (1967 Fine Arts), whose solo exhibition at Sean Kelly Gallery, 528 West 29th Street, runs September 16 – October 12; Barnaby Furnas (BFA 1996 Fine Arts), who is showing at Marianne Boesky Gallery, 535 West 22nd Street, September 16 – October 21; and Kyung Jeon (MFA 2005 Fine Arts), who is pulling double duty at The Proposition, 559 West 22nd Street, curating the group exhibition “Project Room” and showing large-scale paintings/drawings on rice paper and canvas in her solo exhibition “The Impulse Garden”; both shows take place September 16 – October 28.
