A number of SVA alumni are starting off the summer with awards and accolades from some of the world’s top arts organizations. PDN magazine’s Photo Annual 2006, a roundup of the year’s best photography, includes work by Matthew Baum (second-year MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department student), Tania Fernandez (MFA 2006 Photography, Video and Related Media) and Amy Stein (MFA 2006 Photography, Video and Related Media). The Society of Illustrators (SOI) announced the winners of its Annual Scholarship Competition, and Avi Spivak (BFA 2005 Cartooning) and Koren Shadmi (BFA 2006 Illustration) both received top prizes; the SOI also picked Jeremy Deveraturda (BFA 2006 Illustration), Tintin Pantoja (BFA 2005 Cartooning) and Max Turner (BFA 2005 Illustration) as some of the top young illustrators of the year.
Recent MFA Computer Art Department graduate Keng-Ming Liu (2006) has been selected as a finalist in the Animation category of the Adobe Design Achievement Awards. Liu will travel to Canada’s Royal Ontario Museum on July 20 for an awards ceremony and inclusion in an exhibition. Tak Hoon Kim (BFA Animation Department faculty; MFA 2005 Computer Art) recently won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Animation in the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival for his film, Public Bath. Finally, the Art Directors Club’s (ADC) annual “Young Guns” competition, which recognizes the best in young visual communications talent, has picked Masood Kamandy (BFA 2004 Photography) and Jordan Kleinman (BFA 2005 Photography) to be part of this year’s exhibition, which will open at the ADC in November.
