The New York Times has just added Maira Kalman (faculty, MFA Design Department) to its stable of contributing columnists. Each Wednesday, Kalman is authoring a fully illustrated column—featuring a series of original illustrations combined with the artist’s handwritten text—to the subscription-only TimesSelect section of the newspaper’s Web site. Gail Collins, the Times’ editorial page editor, says that Kalman is “sophisticated and witty, and her diverse experiences and creative expertise will surely be a popular addition to our pages.”

In the world of offline publishing, Fantagraphics Books has recently released We All Die Alone, a collection of Mark Newgarden’s (BFA 1982 Cartooning) comic art from 1983 – 1994. Newgarden debuted in the first issue of RAW magazine in 1980, and his work subsequently found its way into a variety of high-profile venues, such as the syndicated strip that appeared in The New York Press and L.A. Weekly. Those syndicated comics make up the bulk of We All Die Alone, alongside Newgarden’s long-form stories, including the much-lauded “Love’s Savage Fury.”
