Heavy Medals

April 7, 2006

The Society of Illustrators recently handed out awards for its Illustrators 48 Annual, and SVA alumni and faculty were prominently placed amongst the winners. Yuko Shimizu (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) won the gold medal for editorial; John Hendrix (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) won the silver medal for book design; Paul Davis (G 1959 Illustration) won gold for institutional illustration; and in the sequential illustration category, the gold medal went to Steve Brodner (faculty, BFA Illustration Department), and Nathan Fox (MFA 2002 Illustration as Visual Essay) took home the silver medal.

Another illustration annual was recently released, this one by 3×3 magazine, and the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department took many of the top honors. Department Chair Marshall Arisman was named Educator of the Year by the magazine, and illustrations by several current students—Daniel Lim, Steven Tabbutt, Tae-Eun Yoo and Hyewon Yum; and alumni—Megan Berkheiser (1997), Eddie Guy (1986), Thomas Kerr (1989), Nora Krug (2004) and Olivier Kugler (2002)—were chosen to represent the past year’s top work. “It’s a new, young magazine,” says Arisman of 3×3. “They’re doing a really good job of putting older and younger talent together in the same space, and it’s great to be included in that.”
