Stand-Up Comics

March 3, 2006

On February 24 – 26 at the Jacob Javits Center, the New York Comic-Con brought the comics world together for one action-packed weekend full of anime screenings, panels, signings and comic book exhibitors. SVA alum and editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics Joe Quesada (BFA 1984 Media Arts) created a limited-edition T-shirt featuring Spider-Man, and the College’s Cartoon Allies, an on-campus group that works to build the strength and community of cartoonists, ran a booth featuring student-created mini-comics and issues of their comics anthology, Inkstains.

Comic-Con also served as a prelude to Freshmeat, a comics convention set to take place at SVA on Saturday, April 22, in the Monkey Bar Lounge, 217 East 23rd Street, where there will be lots of student comics work to browse and buy. Many top-flight editors from such publications as Tokyopop, Papercutz and Nickelodeon Magazine will also be on hand to review portfolios at 209 East 23rd Street.
