Recognition Factor

March 24, 2006

MFA Fine Arts Department faculty member Jerry Saltz has been named a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism. A longtime art critic for The Village Voice and other publications, Saltz has been nominated five times and is the only art critic ever to be named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Criticism twice, following his nomination in 2001. The winners will be announced Monday, April 17, at Columbia University’s Low Library.

Also, several recent alumni have been recognized for their innovative work. Photo District News magazine’s “PDN 30,” an annual list of the top emerging photographic talents, has spotlighted three SVA alumni for the 2006 list: Anna Bauer (BFA 2005 Photography), Jeff Liao (MFA 2005 Photography, Video and Related Media) and Kanako Sasaki (MFA 2004 Photography, Video and Related Media). Print magazine’s “New Visual Artists 2006” list singled out Bobby C. Martin, Jr. (MFA 2003 Design) and Gerald Mark Soto (BFA 2001 Graphic Design) as two of the year’s best young designers.
