The MPS Art Therapy Department is preparing to present Global Art Therapy: Beyond Borders, the department’s 22nd Annual Art Therapy Conference. Taking place on Friday, April 7, 8:45am – 4pm, at McGraw Hill, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, the conference will explore the connections between art and the sociopolitical environment; community dynamics; and the cultural implications of natural disasters from the perspectives of art therapists, social workers and other mental-health practitioners. The program features a keynote talk by Bessel van der Kolk, MD, professor of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School and medical director of Boston’s Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute; and a presentation and workshop by Cathy Malchiodi, ATR, HLM, CPAT, LPCC, a faculty member at the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children in Michigan. Global Art Therapy: Beyond Borders coincides with the department’s annual spring exhibition of work by students and the clients they worked with in their internships. Entitled “Aesthetic Space: The Holding Environment,” the exhibition is on view April 1 – 15, at the Westside Gallery, 141 West 21st Street; Reception: Wednesday, April 5, 5 – 7pm.
