East Meets West

June 24, 2005

A new exhibition is opening this weekend in the Visual Arts Gallery: “Voices of Site,” a multimedia exhibition of works by alumni, faculty and students from SVA’s MFA Fine Arts Department and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (TNUFAM). The exhibition includes sculpture, painting, drawing, installation and video, and is part of an ongoing exchange between the two institutions, fostering new relationships and artistic dialogues. Curated by ON/Megumi Akiyoshi (MFA 2002 Fine Arts) and Kate Gilmore (MFA 2002 Fine Arts), “Voices of Site” includes several artists and projects from an exhibition that took place at TNUFAM in September 2004, along with the addition of recent SVA MFA Fine Arts alumni who are from Japan.

The exhibition will be on view from June 24 – July 9 at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, Suite 1502; there will be an opening reception, including a special presentation by TNUFAM performance artist Mimi Nakajima and videographer Yohei Tanaka, on Tuesday, June 28, 6 – 8pm.
