The Whitney Museum of American Art has commissioned Banks Violette (BFA 1998 Fine Arts), whose work was featured in the “2004 Biennial,” to create a new project for his first solo museum exhibition, “Banks Violette: Untitled.” Violette’s multimedia sculptural installation has a sound component that includes music by Snorre Ruch, part of an insular music subculture called Black Metal, whose ethos embraces nihilism, theatrical morbidity, aggression and violence. The central sculptural component, cast in salt, evokes the ruined skeleton of a church. The exhibition will be on view May 27 – October 2, in the Whitney’s first-floor Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Gallery.
