On Wednesday, November 17, the Humanities and Sciences Department presented the Fall 2004 Poetry Slam in the newly opened Student Center at 217 East 23rd Street. The slam’s coordinator and emcee, faculty member Joe Verilla, introduced the featured readers: Faculty member Simon Van Booy, who opened the show with a reading from his recent publication, Love and the Five Senses; and guest poet Maria Mazzotti-Gillan, director of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College, in Paterson, NJ. Verilla then gave a brief reading of his own work before opening the microphone to SVA students. All students who read were rewarded for their efforts with an SVA Poetry Slam t-shirt as well as cheers of support from the crowd.
Verilla organizes a poetry event each semester, and says that he encourages SVA students to start working on writing poetry now for the Spring 2005 SVA Poetry Slam, currently slated for March.
