On Monday, February 9, School of Visual Arts proudly opens the exhibition Steinberg: An Intimate View of his Art and World at the Visual Arts Museum, 209 East 23rd Street. Saul Steinberg was one of the most influential graphic artists of our time, and Anton Van Dalen, an SVA fine arts intructor, had the privilege of working with him as a studio assistant for over 30 years. With more than 100 pieces of art and artifacts displayed in this exhibition, visitors will gain an unusually personal perspective on the output of a very private man. There will be a great deal of work never seen before, including drawings, posters and other printed matter that Steinberg gave to van Dalen over the years. Visitors will also catch a glimpse of some of the items that surrounded Steinberg while he worked, including his worktable and chair, a daily calendar, a watch and drawing utensils. Alongside van Dalen, Francis DiTommaso, the director of SVA Museum & Student Galleries, co-curated this exhibition which will be on view through March 13.
