According to SHOOT magazine (1/16/04), director Samuel Bayer (BFA 1987 Illustration) recently announced that he is leaving the field of music videos. The new music video, “Hold On,” for the group Good Charlotte, will be his last.
“Hold On” is an anti-suicide anthem, which posed a monumental and sensitive task for creating a video that reflected the song’s serious nature. The video begins with a shocking statement about suicide and, periodically throughout the video, the music stops in order to show heart-wrenching testimonials from families who’ve lost loved ones. Bayer plans to work with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to find other uses for the numerous hours of footage shot that didn’t make the video. With regard to working on such a serious project, Bayer says, “I got excited that I could do something that actually meant something to me, and I wanted to go out on this note.” As one of the most acclaimed music video directors in the business, Bayer has created more than 100 clips for groups including the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow, Smashing Pumpkins, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz and Blink-182.
