Apfelbaum in America

January 9, 2004

The cover of the January 2004 issue of Art in America features a detail from Split, a 1998 work of synthetic velvet and fabric dye by MFA Fine Arts Department instructor Polly Apfelbaum. Inside the magazine, Apfelbaum’s recent exhibition at Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is examined by writer and BFA Fine Arts Department instructor Stephen Westfall, who says, “The installation at the ICA was glorious, perhaps the most beautiful midcareer survey I’ve ever seen.” Split, like most of Apfelbaum’s work, is spread across the gallery’s floor in a fan of color and form rather than being hung on a wall.
