SVA’s celebrated in-house design studio Visual Arts Press has hit the mark by winning awards in a couple of industry design competitions. The University & College Designers Association (UCDA) recently announced the winners from the 33rd Annual Competition, and the Visual Arts Press took home awards in four categories: First, in the “Illustration-Complete Book or Unit” category, the Press was recognized for the illustrations by Nathan Fox (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) that appear in the Student Survival Guide. The second award was given in the “Photography-Complete Book or Unit” category for the Photography Portfolio & clam shell box created for senior BFA photography students. The third and fourth awards were granted in the “Poster” category for instructor Adrienne Leban’s “Art Is…” poster and instructor James Victore’s “SVA Continuing Education” poster; both teach in the Advertising and Graphic Design Department. The winning work will be on view at the 2003 UCDA Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, October 12 through October 15, 2003.
The Visual Arts Press also received recognition in Print magazine’s digital design
annual in the “Self-Promotion” category. The project awarded was the SVA web site home page, featuring illustrations by recent graduate Robert Khor, who captured the essence of Yogi Berra’s maxim: “You can observe a lot just by watchin’.” Visit the winning piece at: www.schoolofvisualarts.edu/berra/.
