Jack Potter Studio Christened with Plaque

January 6, 2003

In late December a plaque was installed on the wall outside of Room 501 at 209 East 23 Street, christening the space Jack Potter Studio. Mr. Potter, who passed away September 14 of last year, was a much admired drawing instructor at SVA for more than 40 years. His memorial service on November 6 at the Amphitheater drew a multitude of former colleagues and students, many of whom offered moving tributes to the man, his work, and his influence. The plaque reads, in part: “Jack Potter taught Drawing and Thinking in studio 501, inspiring and motivating thousands of students whose lives were the better for it. Among his many talents was an ability to persuade students to change their way of thinking and consequently their way of drawing. His like will not be seen again.”
