The Jay Hawkins Gallery recently opened an exhibition called Jolie/Laide which features the work of Annabelle Jasmin Verhoye (MFA Illustration as Visual Essay, 2001). Ms. Verhoye’s paintings in the exhibition revolve around the topic of sexuality and seek to restore its power, grace and beauty, which the artist believes have been stripped away by the media. Shortly before graduating from SVA, Ms. Verhoye had an illustration of hers published in The New Yorker. The work was well received and led to an exhibition at the Society of Illustrators. Ms. Verhoye now works extensively for European and American publishing houses and her illustrations have appeared in fashion magazines, newspapers, and sales promotions. Jolie/Ladie will be on view through November 2 at the Jay Hawkins Gallery, 526 West 26 Street (#712), Wednesday through Saturday, 1 to 6pm.
