Connections: New York & Japan (Liberty Partnership Program Exhibition); August 14 – 27; Westside Gallery, 141 West 21 Street; Reception: August 21, 5 – 7pm. Connections is part of the Art Education Department’s annual presentation of art created by students in the Liberty Partnership Program. The program is funded by the New York State Education Department and is focused on the development of inner-city school children. The exhibition will feature thousands of tiny colorful origami cranes created by schoolchildren and townspeople from Niigata, Japan. After September 11, the people of Niigata wanted to express their compassion, so they chose as an offering the paper crane, a symbol of hope and peace. In just one month, over 60,000 cranes were made.
