Target Designs

May 2, 2002

Recently, the popular American superstore, Target, or “Tar-Jay” as it is playfully known, asked some of today’s design industry heavyweights to participate in the store’s new design efforts. Paper Magazine thought they would initiate a similar project for fun. The magazine asked some of New York’s top designers to create new products for Target. From the list of designers who participated, three have close ties to SVA: faculty members Stefan Sagmeister and Maira Kalman, and alum Toland Grinnell (BFA Fine Arts 1994). Sagmeister, who created a recycled chair and stool, said of his playful product: “The stool is always clean–you just tear off a new sheet . . . ” Readers can find these whimsical product designs for Target in the May issue of Paper. Among the other notable designers are Pierre Cardin, Geoffrey Beene, Betsey Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, and the Spades (Kate, Andy and Jack).
