Proof Positive
A major piece of the College’s outreach to prospective students is the SVA Undergraduate Catalog, a comprehensive overview of the academic, creative and social offerings at SVA. The 2009–10 iteration of the Catalog (which is reconceptualized and redesigned by the Visual Arts Press every three years) is Proof, which is earning wide recognition from the design world. The Art Directors Club (ADC) announced the winners of its 88th annual awards, and Proof took home an ADC Silver Cube in the Design Print category. The Catalog will be included in the ADC’s Art Directors Annual 88, which will be published at the end of the year. In addition, Proof has taken home a Silver Pencil in design at this year’s One Show, an honorable mention in I.D. magazine’s Annual Design Review and a nod from Print magazine’s yearly Creativity & Commerce competition.
More kudos came in from the UK, with Creative Review (CR) and D&AD (Design and Art Direction) both recognizing Proof for its innovative design. CR has selected the Catalog for inclusion in its 2009 Annual, and D&AD chose the College as a winner of a Pencil award for the publication. “Starting with the high-quality work our students create, we had an advantage from the beginning,” says Michael J. Walsh, the art director at the Press and Proof’s lead designer. “I think the Catalog really captures what makes SVA special, and it seems our peers agree.”
