Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. The slaying of Julius Caesar. All remarkable points in history and culture that call up radically different visuals. SVA faculty member Jeffrey Metzner has rethought these three scenes, along with nearly 100 others, in the singular style of stick-figure drawings in his new book, STICK: Great Moments in Art History, Film and More… (Clarkson Potter). From Thelma and Louise’s vehicular leap across a gaping canyon to Edvard Munch’s famous Scream, Metzner humorously renders familiar scenes, characters and artworks as simple black-and-white line drawings, stripping each down to its stick-figure essence.
To celebrate the release of STICK, SVA has partnered with Barnes & Noble to host a book signing and discussion with Metzner on Wednesday, May 24, 7pm, at the Chelsea Barnes & Noble, 675 Sixth Avenue. This event is free and open to the public.
