SVA Photo Exhibition in Southern France Pays Tribute to Van Gogh

September 18, 2015

In SVA’s ongoing partnership with the Association Valetudo, an exhibition featuring work by MPS Digital Photography students opened on Friday, September 18 at the hospital in Southern France where Van Gogh made many of his best-known paintings. Entitled “Vincent, from the roots to the stars” and coinciding with “Van Gogh in 2015,” which commemorates the 125th anniversary of the death of Vincent Van Gogh, the exhibition is on view through October 21 at the Maison de Santé Saint-Paul—today, a woman’s psychiatric clinic that occupies a historic site in Saint-Rémy.

Willem Van Gogh was on hand at the exhibition opening to read the letter written by his great-grandfather Theo, announcing the artist’s demise. In addition, two opera singers read other excerpts and improvised harmonies accompanied by a solo bass player.

Paintings by patients at the facility appear alongside the work by SVA students in the exhibition. Curated by SVA Galleries Director Francis di Tommaso. Check out some of the students’ photos in the slideshow below.
