A new campaign from SVA Acting Chairman and faculty member Milton Glaser aims to add urgency to the movement to reverse global warming before it’s too late. The campaign’s message is simple: It’s time to put away euphemisms like “global warming” or “climate change,” as they make the current situation sound benign, or even positive.
The campaign’s slogan is “It’s not warming, it’s dying.” Its centerpiece is a 1-inch button whose design suggests a view of Earth from outer space, with only a narrow band of life remaining. (For maximum visibility, the green swathe is printed with glow-in-the-dark ink.) The buttons are available for order from itsnotwarming.com, at $5 for five. Buttons are sold in sets of five to minimize the cost (all proceeds go toward production and distribution) and to encourage people to give them away to friends, family and coworkers.
“The idea is to have everybody wear this button all over the world as acknowledgement of what’s going on,” Glaser told The Independent.
In an effort to appeal to people of all ages, supporters are encouraged to spread the word on social media, using the hashtag #itsnotwarming, and to post “selfies” wearing the button. The project’s Twitter account offers a way for supporters to connect and provides easy access to scientific data and news reports on the topic.
An “It’s Not Warming” billboard will be installed on the western exterior of SVA’s 209 East 23rd Street building on August 1. In addition, the College is distributing free buttons at SVA and campuses nationwide through its network of institutions in the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD).
